ABOUT

SAMMA is a line of jewelry defined by a stripped down vocabulary of modular form. Elemental lines and simplified shapes in brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver — combine. Patterns based on stacking, bundling, interlocking, and weaving primary shapes make tactile, sculptural pieces. Repetition is broken by slight variations, either in color or in structure, lending a warmth and individual touch. Seriality and standardized construction are the basis of a lexicon of shapes and materials that reference both modernism and vernacular forms of adornment.

Hanna Sandin is a sculptor based in New York City. She began SAMMA in 2009, with a single piece- a simple cotton rope with a cluster of machined brass triangles.  In 2013, Hanna released a new signature piece- the WAVY chain,  which similarly plays on the abstraction of the letterforms in the name for the line and redesigned logo.

After designing 10 collections,  SAMMA has transitioned to a permanent collection of its signature pieces available online solely through this website, and in-store with select museum stores and retailers.

CARE

SAMMA jewelry is handmade in metals that are sensitive to oxidation.  Regular maintenance and care is recommended.  Brass, white bronze, bronze, copper and silver naturally oxidize over time, adding a darker cast. Sometimes oils on skin can cause other colors.  Copper for instance turns iridescent blue when stored on certain concrete surfaces. Even 10k gold will darken with wear, depending on body chemistry.

For best maintenance,  jewelry should be removed when bathing, exercising, and cleaning, certainly not washed in the washing machine accidentally.  Be mindful that skin products and hair products can effect the surface, as well as soap build-up when doing dishes.  High polish surfaces of the pieces are also sensitive to surface scratching on rough surfaces.  Storing SAMMA jewelry clean and dry in a plastic bag when not in use is one way to prevent oxidation from air.  Using a cloth pouch is another recommendation for protecting against surface wear.

Tarnish can be removed by gently polishing your pieces with a soft cloth and silver metal polish.  Pro-polish pads are also available in packs of 50 online and can remove light tarnish and scratches on all unplated metals.

Gold plate can only be cleaned with a soft brush and nonabrasive dish soap. Polishing cloths and pro-polish pads will abrade the microns of gold that are on the surface.

When in doubt,  SAMMA pieces can be taken to a professional polisher or local jeweler to be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner.

REPAIRS

Complimentary repairs are offered for pieces purchased directly from SAMMA online for up to one year, with customer covering costs for shipping.  Pieces that are over $2,500 are covered up to 3 years.  Pieces purchased from other stores are not covered for complimentary repairs. Contact sammahanna@gmail.com with a repair request, and I will get back to you with what is possible.

Repairs cover any manufacturing defects such as replacement of stones under 3mm,  reattachment of posts for earrings, and fixing chains or clasps on chains.

Lost items are not covered under repair warranty by SAMMA.

Resizing of rings and bracelets is also not included.  Kindly return the ring for a return or an exchange for the correct size. Resizing can be discussed for an additional fee- one size up or down is possible for most rings,  excluding FLATTOP and similarly sculptural rings.

Resizing of soldered brick bracelets requires the reconstruction of the entire piece  and repolishing of each element.  Be mindful of the sizing when placing an order for a brick bracelet-  it is best to order the correct size.  Some of the flatlets can have links added or removed-  this is an easier modification,  but consider ordering the correct size if available.  Fees incurred in both instances of modification.

SAMMA pieces can be plated upon request,  however I am committed to cycling out any gold plated stock in permanent collection.  I have always thought the integrity of the materials is a part of the beauty of the pieces.  Gold plating, even vermeil which is slightly thicker,  will always wear off and cannot be maintained easily the way solid metal can be with proper care.  Furthermore, gold plating is inherently harmful to the environment, as cyanide is the chemical used in the process of plating.  Some clients may wish to ignore that and request plating.  Plating orders will take an additional 2 weeks,  and some pieces may not be able to be plated,  including some brick bracelets.  Contact by email to get updated information on additional plating services for individual pieces.

Permanent collection will have select items added to inventory in solid silver or gold-  perhaps consider waiting and saving for these items instead of plating.

CUSTOM

Custom work by SAMMA have ranged anywhere from $3,000 to $26,000.  A custom service fee of $1,000-$5,000 depending on the scale of the work is required upfront and is non-refundable.  Clients can send an email to set-up a 1 hour in-person meeting at my studio in Brooklyn or virtual consult to discuss possible project.  Custom is most often engagement and wedding rings, but also includes novel pieces or variations on designs from the collection in other metals, sometimes with the addition of stones.  Should the client choose to move forward with the execution of the custom work, the service fee will be applied to the final cost of the custom work.  Custom pieces take anywhere from 8-12 weeks to complete pending my schedule. I schedule availability to accommodate custom work around any exhibition obligations,  as well as regular production and delivery schedule of the permanent collection.  Under some circumstances I may be able to accommodate an expedited schedule,  but I cannot accommodate rush custom work, nor customers that do not have an adequate budget to work with.  I can offer to work with recycled family pieces in some cases and am happy to do so, which can be a more affordable option in terms of reducing material costs, but my fees are non-negotiable.

All gold and silver is sourced from refiner Hoover and Strong, which is the most responsible precious metal manufacturer worldwide.  I work with a small network of gemstone dealers in the jewelry district to source stones as needed by clients for their unique pieces.

Fee structure for commercial clients such as other brands or companies are not included in these terms, and follow other terms for fee structure. Kindly contact directly for more information.
